Disc Golf
61Disc
golf is a game played with a frisbee instead of a ball. The object of
the game is very similar to traditional golf or ball golf as disc
golfers call it. The golfer tries to get the disc into the Disc Golf Basket in the fewest number of frisbee throws.
Disc
golf was recognized and formalized in the 70's. Since then many disc
golf courses have popped up all over the United States. Most of the
disc golf courses are free to play and unlike traditional golf there
are no tee times. To find out where there are some disc golf courses
near you try going to Professional Disc Golf Association's Course Directory.
Disc
golf is a great sport because it promotes good health and does not
require a lot of money to start playing. You can buy a disc or even
play with a frisbee from your garage. More experienced players like to
buy discs that allow the golfer to throw further and harder than a
traditional frisbee allows. There are several types of discs that one
can use while disc golfing.
There are drivers, putters,
mid-range, and specialty discs. All discs also have different speeds in
which they can travel with the drivers being the highest speed and the
putters being the slowest.
The object of the game is to throw the disc or frisbee at the pole-hole and get the disc into the pole-hole in as few of tries as possible. Similarly to regular golf, there are birdies, eagles, holes in one, bogies, and scoring is the same. There are penalties for throwing the disc out of bounds and disc golf courses are typically 9 or 18 holes. Most local park districts have begun to recognize disc golf as a sport and have erected disc golf courses because of the low cost needed to create a course.
Disc golf is a great way to stay in shape because it requires a lot of walking and some courses are spread out over several miles.
